Conflicts over the Korean peninsula have risen over the last year due to Pyongyang firing numerous ballistic missiles.
South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol, who took the helm on May 1, has announced an aggressive stance towards North Korea and indicated closer connections to the US.
This month North Korea became a nuclear-armed state, with its leader Kim Jong-un refusing to discuss talks on denuclearisation. Despite several restrictions, Pyongyang conducted six nuclear tests in 2006 between 2006 and 2017.
